The African Women's Education Fund (AWEF)

Pendo & Happiness in Tanzania

Maria a Student in Tanzania

The African Women’s Education Fund,      (AWEF) an independent, ecumenical undertaking administered by its own Board of Trustees, is a grass roots attempt to help young women in Africa, especially Tanzania, attend Secondary school (Ordinary and Advanced levels) which is equivalent to middle and high school in the United States system. Rooted in the belief that the single best way to attack poverty in the third world is by educating women, AWEF has almost no overhead. Though sponsored by the Capuchin Franciscans Friars, its Board controls its funds, giving each of the six young women it supports $700 a year for her education, enough to pay all her costs for the year.
