Mahatma Gandhi Award for the Capuchin Bishop of Kashmir
30 January 2007-
Msgr. Peter Celestine Elampassery, O.F.M. Cap.,
Bishop of the Jammu-Srinagar Diocese in the
Indian Region of Kashmir received the Mahatma
Gandhi Award for his distinguished contribution
toward peace in Kashmir.
The Prime Minister of Kashmir, Guam Nabi Azad, led numerous
political, diplomatic, religious leaders and citizens in the
presentation of the award to the bishop on 30 January 2007.
This is the first time that a Catholic has received this award.
The Prime Minister praised Bishop Elampassery for his dedicated
service in this region of Kashmir. In his remarks, the Bishop
stated that “this is an important moment for the
church in Kashmir. Our efforts along with the civil authorities to bring about the pacification and
reconciliation among a divided people in our area
have received public recognition today”.
Bishop Elampassery is from St. Joseph’s Province in Kerala. He
was ordained a bishop on 6 September 1998.
